Vision
  • To empower the young students by imparting professional knowledge and skills, moulding their holistic personality and making them economically competent to face all personal and global challenges.
Mission
  • To prepare the students in becoming self-reliant, to establish themselves as an entrepreneur in any of the varied fields of Home Science and to uphold professionalism and ethics for improving their quality of living.
History of the Department
  • Department of Home Science is one of the vibrant Science Departments established in the year 1981. It has been selected by UGC under the vocationalisation of the first-degree programme, offering a dual degree programme of Certificate and Advanced Diploma Course in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics since 2002. Home Science course has been converted to Food Processing in 2006. The nomenclature of the course changed into B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics with Computer Applications in the year 2012 for the benefit of the students’ career. In the year 2016-2017, the nomenclature of the course was changed into B.Sc Home Science - Nutrition and Dietetics. The Department extends its services for the upliftment of rural homemakers, self-help groups, rural school children and public. The main aims of the department are empowering the rural girls for societal excellence and thereby empowering the individual, family, community and the nation.
  • The Department of Home Science also offers a University Affiliated Certificate and Advanced Diploma Course in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics .

  • The Department offers Certificate and Advanced Diploma Courses in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • It has well-equipped laboratories with expertise in performing food analysis including raw materials and finished products that will lead to accurate nutritional information
  • The Department offers consultancy services to various industries and institutions to ensure physico- chemical properties of foods at a variety of food processing stages.
  • The Department launched the startup company Virutcham in the year 2019-2020 to showcase the innovative ideas and entrepreneurial skills of the students.
  • The Department conducts Food Mela with delightful food stalls every year to nurture the innate creativity and team spirit in students.
  • Since 1996 the Department has been organizing Idhayam Cookery Contest in collaboration with Idhayam Group of Companies, Virudhunagar at the Departmental and InterDepartmental level.
  • The Department celebrates important national and international days and weeks designated to promote awareness of nutrition for upholding a holistic healthy lifestyle.
  • The Department established a diet counseling center from 2021-2022 onwards to provide personalized nutritional care.
  • The Department conducts prominent alumnae meetings to motivate the students to pursue their carrier opportunities.
  • The Department completed a training progamme and popular lecture series under the sponsorship of TNSCST–DIT and CTEP-DBT.
  • The Department emphasizes the importance of nutrition for healthy living among the rural people through extension activity in collaboration with ICDS, Virudhunagar every year.
  • The faculty members associate slow learners with advanced learners so that extra care is taken for those slow learners to come forward in academics.
  • The Department successfully organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences at national and international levels to prepare the students to pursue their career objectives in advanced education, industry, scientific research, and teaching.
  • Provides entrepreneurial training programmes to Earn While You Learn students.
  • Invited resource persons from various Universities and colleges to organize guest lectures.

  • Organized a State level seminar on “Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian diet - PANACEA for Modern Life Style Diseases” in 2017.
  • Organized a training programme for the Self Help Group Women sponsored by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology on Dissemination of Innovative Technology (DIT) entitled “ Food preservation and Convenience Food” from 24.07.2017 to 26.07.2017.
  • Conducted an Inter-Collegiate Hands-on Training Workshop on “Entrepreneurial Skills” in collaboration with the Departments of Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany and Costume Design and Fashion on 09.01.2019 and 10.01.2019.

  • Conducted Inter collegiate and Inter-Departmental competitions Health Fest-2021 such as oratorical competitions, Ad-Act, For and Against, Video making and E-Poster Creations through virtual mode as a part of National Nutrition Week Celebrations on 06.09.2021.
  • Organized DBT-CTEP Popular Lecture Series on Biotech foods - Panacea to cure human diseases sponsored by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi on 06.10.2021, 02.02.2022 and 16.02.2022.
  • Organized a One Day National level webinar on Medicinal Values of Indian Traditional Foods in collaboration with Tamil Department on 30.03.2022.
