Vision
  • To develop scientific, technical, research and entrepreneurial skills to uphold professionalism and ethics for bringing out successful professionals and contribute for the betterment of family and community in the contemporary world.
Mission
  • To empower the students by providing quality education through scientific aspects of Home Science and ensure health for the family, community and nation.
History of the Department
     Department of Home Science is one of the vibrant Science Departments established in the year 1981. It has been selected by UGC under the vocationalisation of the first-degree programme, offering a dual degree programme of Certificate and Advanced Diploma Course in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics since 2002. The department received Rs.50 lakhs grant-in-aid from Ministry of Food Processing Industry, New Delhi in the year 2006 to offer a Postgraduate Course, M.Sc Food Processing and Quality Control. Home Science course has been converted to Food Processing in 2007. The nomenclature of the course changed into B.Sc. Nutrition and Dietetics with Computer Applications in the year 2012 for the benefit of the students’ career. In the year 2016-2017, the nomenclature of the course was changed into B.Sc. Home Science - Nutrition and Dietetics. The nomenclature of the PG Programme has been modified as M.Sc Home Science – Nutrition and Dietetics from the academic year 2020-2021. The Department extends its services for the upliftment of rural homemakers, self-help groups, rural school children and public. The main aims of the department are empowering the rural girls for societal excellence and thereby empowering the individual, family, community and the nation. The change in nomenclature would be helpful for the students to pursue higher studies and also would help to attain wider scope of career opportunities.
Highlights of the Department
  • The Department offers Certificate and Advanced Diploma Courses in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • It has well-equipped laboratories with expertise in performing food analysis including raw materials and finished products that will lead to accurate nutritional information
  • The Department offers consultancy services to various industries and institutions to ensure physico- chemical properties of foods at a variety of food processing stages.
  • The Department launched the Campus company Virutcham in the year 2019-2020 to showcase the innovative ideas and entrepreneurial skills of the students.
  • The Department conducts Food Mela with delightful food stalls every year to nurture the innate creativity and team spirit in students.
  • Since 1996 the Department has been organizing Idhayam Cookery Contest in collaboration with Idhayam Group of Companies, Virudhunagar at the Departmental and InterDepartmental level.
  • The Department celebrates important national and international days and weeks designated to promote awareness of nutrition for upholding a holistic healthy lifestyle.
  • The Department established a diet counseling center from 2021-2022 onwards to provide personalized nutritional care.
  • The Department conducts prominent alumnae meetings to motivate the students to pursue their carrier opportunities.
  • The Department completed a training progamme and popular lecture series under the sponsorship of TNSCST–DIT and CTEP-DBT.
  • The Department emphasizes the importance of nutrition for healthy living among the rural people through extension activity in collaboration with ICDS, Virudhunagar every year.
  • The faculty members associate slow learners with advanced learners so that extra care is taken for those slow learners to come forward in academics.
  • The Department successfully organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences at national and international levels to prepare the students to pursue their career objectives in advanced education, industry, scientific research, and teaching.
  • Provides entrepreneurial training programmes to Earn While You Learn students.
  • Invited resource persons from various Universities and colleges to organize guest lectures.

VIRUTCHAM

OBJECTIVES
  • To gain valuable, fashionable and practical work experience to become entrepreneurs.
  • To shift the students from job seekers to job creators.

FUNCTIONS
        Virutcham as a campus company plays an important role in enhancing the student entrepreneurial skills. Virutcham provides an opportunity for the students to apply the theoretical knowledge and skills they have acquired in campus to real world situations. Virutcham provides a platform to convert their novel ideas in to commercial food products. They develop new recipes that cater to the specific needs and preferences of their target groups. They also engage in research and development activities to identify and incorporate new ingredients with high nutritional value into their products. These activities help them to improve their marketing strategy also. Virutcham Company runs with the joint efforts of UG and PG students. Students take up various roles such as CEO, Financial manager, Production manager, Purchasing manager, Marketing manager, Sales manager, RND, HRM and Stock maintenance manager which help them to fine-tune their skills in various aspects. These acquired skills help them to become successful entrepreneurs.

HISTORY
        The Department of Home Science ventured into a new era of student startup "Virutcham" since 2019. Mrs. Kavitha.Senthil Kumar, Industrialist and Exporters, KDS Coir Farm, Vadipatti, Madurai, who was the alumnae of the department of Home Science, inaugurated the startup Virutcham Company. She motivated the students to start small company of their own. She encouraged the students to build up leadership, innovation and creation to run the company. This startup has been functioning successfully as a campus company to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, with entrepreneurial spirit resulting in the development of a plethora of unique and impactful nutritious products. This significant journey induces the student's creativity, perseverance and deep commitment to make them entrepreneurs in future.
