Vision
  • To empower the young students by imparting professional knowledge and skills, moulding their holistic personality and making them economically competent to face all personal and global challenges.
Mission
  • To prepare the students in becoming self-reliant, to establish themselves as an entrepreneur in any of the varied fields of Home Science and to uphold professionalism and ethics for improving their quality of living.
History of the Department
  • Department of Home Science is one of the vibrant Science departments established in the year 1981. It has been selected by UGC under the vocationalisation of the first-degree programme, offering a dual degree programme of Certificate and Advanced Diploma Course in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics since 2002. Home Science course has been converted to Food Processing in 2006. The nomenclature of the course changed into B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics with Computer Applications in the year 2012 for the benefit of the students’ career. In the year -2016-2017, the nomenclature of the course was changed into B.Sc Home Science - Nutrition and Dietetics. The department extends its services for the upliftment of rural homemakers, self-help groups, rural school children and public. The main aims of the department are empowering the rural girls for societal excellence and thereby empowering the individual, family, community and the nation. The department has good state of the art laboratories with sophisticated equipments.
Highlights of the Department
  • Every year the department observes International Breast Feeding Week, National Nutrition Week, World Food Day and Yoga Day.
  • Organized State level seminars on “Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian diet - PANACEA for Modern Life Style Diseases” in 2017.
  • Organized a training programme for the Self Help Group Women sponsored by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology on Dissemination of Innovative Technology (DIT) entitled “ Food preservation and Convenience Food” during the period of 24.07.2017-26.07.2017.
  • Conducted an Inter-Collegiate Hands-on Training- Workshop on “Entrepreneurial Skills” in collaboration with the departments of Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany and Costume Design and Fashion in the year 2018.
  • Organized state level workshop on Hands on training workshop on “Entrepreneurial skills” on 9.1.19 and10.1.19.
  • Organized state level workshop on Hands on training workshop on “Entrepreneurial skills” on 4.2.19 and 5.2.19
  • A study on Impact of diet counseling among Anaemic Adolescent Girls was conducted to the WUS students. 4.2.19 and 5.2.19
  • Provided entrepreneurial training programmes to Earn While You Learn students.
  • Paper presentation at Regional, National and International level conferences by all the faculty members.
  • Every year the department offers consultancy services to various sectors. “Virutcham” Startup company was launched on 06.09.2019
  • The Department of Home Science organized a Two day International Conference on “Scientific and Social Approaches to Mental Well-being” on 03.10.2019 and 04.10.2019
  • Organized a Training programme for the School Teachers in collaboration with Rotary club of Virudhunagar on “Importance and Benefits of Clean Drinking water and Importance of Personal Hygiene on 11.01.2020
  • The Department of Home Science organized a Two day Webinar on "Strategies to Overcome Pandemic Diseases" on 24.05.2020 & 25.05.2020.
  • In collaboration with ICDS Ms.Hema Latha, Child Development Project Officer Virudhunagar gave an awareness programme in connection with Poshan Abhiyaan on identification of SAM children and also promotion of Nutri garden on 21.09.2020
  • Organized a Virtual Workshop on “Rush to Brush" on 27.10.2020 and in collaboration with JCI conducted a workshop on Herbal Sanitary Napkin Making.
  • In collaboration with Idhayam Group of Companies, 25 th Idhayam Cookery Contest was conducted for the outgoing students of the Department of Home Science on 23.02.2021.
  • Organized an alumni meet on 23.10.2020.
  • Every year the department of Home Science offers consultancy services to various sectors and organizes guest lectures.

  • The Department won the overall shield in Arokh Fest - 2017, intercollegiate competitions organized by SFR College, Sivakasi on 10.01.2017.
  • Selvi. G. Jenani I B.Sc Home Science – Nutrition And Dietetics won II Prize in the Nutri News Competition and Selvi. K.Kaviya II UG Home Science– Nutrition And Dietetics won III Prize in the Vegetable carving Competition in the Health Fest-2018 Competitions conducted by the Department of Food Science and Technology, Arulanadhar College, Karumathur.
  • M.Hemalatha, B. Tharani, K.Gurudevika and N. Sivaranjani of II B.Sc Home Science– Nutrition And Dietetics won I Prize in the Ad act Competition and M.Vaishnadevi and Malar Vizhi of II B.Sc Home Science– Nutrition And Dietetics won II Prize in the Art from Waste Competition. M.Haritha of I UG Home Science– Nutrition And Dietetics won II Prize in Poster Making Competition in the FIT FEST 2K’18.   • On 2018, M.Vaishnadevi and Malar Vizhi of B.Sc Home Science– Nutrition And Dietetics won II Prize in the Art from Waste Competition in the 3rd One Day Intra Collegiate competition conducted by the Department of Library and Information Science, V.V.Vanniaperumal College for Women, Virudhunagar
  • M.Vaishnadevi and B.Tharani of II UG Home Science– Nutrition And Dietetics got I Prize(Rs200/-) in Art from Waste Competition.M.Vaishnadevi and B.Tharani of II UG Home Science got III Prize (Rs 300/-) in Vegetable Carving Competition. in the Viruthai Iyarkkai vala Competition conducted by Viruthai Iyarkkai vala Amaippu, Allammpatti, Virudhunagar on 2019.
  • S.Karthika devi III B.Sc Home Science –Nutrition and Dietetics received the Best Outgoing Student Award for the academic year 2018 – 2019.
