History of the Department

B.A(Branch XII –b) Tamil Literature Degree course was started in 1971. Though only 24 students joined in B.A Tamil Literature initially, nearly 75 students have been admitted to this course in the current year. Eleven highly qualified faculty adorn the Department of Tamil. The Professional ethics set by the seniors are strictly followed today. Our faculty members prove their scholarship, devotion to duty, humanism in handling the students. Everyone takes great interest in presenting papers at the National and International level. Many of them have published Books. Few are rendering service as member of Board of Studies.
The Department of Tamil has been rendering a useful service to the college by promoting the interest of the students in the study of Tamil Literature. It aims at the overall development of the students. Valluvar Vizha is celebrated every year in the college by the department of Tamil. In connection with that many competitions are organized for all the students. Students are encouraged to memorize the Thirukkural.
The Department of Tamil also offers a University Affiliated Certificate Course in Tourism and Travel Management .
Research Centre of our department was established in the year 2021-2022.

All the Faculty members are honoured with the Doctoral Degree.
Five Faculty members have got Guideship.
The department has produced one Doctorate and Eight Scholars are pursuing their Doctoral research under the Guideship of our Faculty.
Our Department has produced Sixteen M.Phil. scholars.
Our Faculty members have published 11 Books.
Our Department has 3 class rooms , 4 computer with Broadband Connection and OHP facility.
Well-furnished Department with Research Room, Reading Room and 4 computers with Broad Band Connection and Power Point Presentaion Classroom fesilities available.
We have well-equipped library with 4918 books.
Celebrating Pulavar – Vizha every year is a special feature of Tamil Department. Every year tribute is paid to an ancient and modern poet. Many competitions are organized to acquaint students with the poetic merits of a particular poet. Reading a poem is an elevating experience. The students avail this chance to better themselves. There is a satisfaction in the elevation of their mental culture.
Our Department has taken special efforts to preserve the palm-leaf manuscripts, bearing a world of wisdom. Our Department has edited some palm leaf manuscript to Books.
The Department of Tamil has great ambition to promote the reading of Tamil Literature and bring out its value. In connection with it every year, we are arranging Seminars, Workshops and Guest Lectures.
Organise conferences in association with Chemmozhi Tamil Research Centre, Chennai.
Conducted Webinar, Seminar and Workshop collaborated with Departments of Home Science, Economics and English (Aided).
Publishing Department Magazine “Ezhu Gnayiru (எழு ஞாயிறு)” every year.
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) singed between Department of Tamil V.V.Vanniaperumal College for Women, Virudhunagar and Pandian Educational Trust, Virudhunagar, Tamilnadu, India, Journals under the Aegis of UGC CARE, Pandian Journal of Temple Studies (E-ISSN-2583-0880), Chenkaanthal (E-ISSN-2583-04810) from 19.03.2022to 18.03.2023.
Conducted Two Days Workshop, Topic – “Research Ethics and Research Methodology.

Achievements

The Department of Tamil organized a two days online International Conference in collaboration with Tamil Valarchi Mandram, Sydney, Australia on 20.11.2020 and 21.11.2020.
Our Department has arranged an online international meeting on 01.09.2021 for our Alumni students.
Dr.S.Yogam received Rs. 6000/- for VVVC MRP-1, Topic- பதினெண் கீழ்க்கணக்கில் சூழலியல் மேலாண்மை.
Our Staff Members are taking TNPSC Classes.
Tamil Nadu manuscript conservation group have been carried out to digitalize 570 palm manuscript in the department of Tamil since 01.09.2022.
Department of Tamil joined with department of computer science, digitalized the following literature of palm manuscript in the academic year 2021- 2022.

Our old student J.Kamatchi Gayathri has won the ‘Sakala kala valli’ Award in the year 2020.
III BA Tamil Department students studied Palm manuscript as certificate course for 5 days from 2020-2021 Academic year. This courses thought as Value Added course. In this course, students are studying about history of palm manuscript, types, how to prepare Manuscripts, different types of languages, training to read the different languages, conservation of manuscript and digitalization of palm manuscript.
