To empower the students with knowledge and skills and mould them into competent individuals with confidence to face challenges in life.

Mission

To chisel the creative and critical faculties of the students through in-depth study of English literary texts, to instil a fervour for research endeavours and to strengthen their linguistic competency for employability and better living.

History of the Department

The Department of English has been rendering its service by offering Part II English from the inception of the College in 1962. The Undergraduate Programme in English was launched in 1968. The Department was upgraded as PG Department in 1979. M.Phil. Programme has been offered since 2004. The Department has been recognized as Research Centre since 2011 and has produced 17 Ph.D. candidates. There are 9 potential Research Supervisors recognized by Madurai Kamaraj University. At present 14 Research Scholars (2 Full-time & 12 Part-time) are pursuing research with utmost commitment.
The Department of English also offers UGC-Career oriented Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma Courses in Communicative and Functional English.

Hebesia 2018, an Inter-Collegiate Competition was conducted on 28.09.2019.
Literary Exhibition was organized on 27.12.2018.

2019-2020

Research Centre in English produced 2 M. Phil. and 2 Ph.D. candidates in 2019-2020.
Dr. T. Ganga Parameswari acted as resource person in Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and Einstein College of Arts and Science, Tirunelveli.
Dr. S. Anitha acted as resource person in Thiruvalluvar University Constituent College, Kallakurichi and Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi.
Dr. B.Winmayil acted as Chairperson in SRM University, Ramapuram and Guest Speaker in Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi.
Dr. R.Priya has authored the book entitled A Succinct Guide to Shakespeare 978-93-5274-561-6 published by Trinity Press, New Delhi.
Dr. R.Priya has received Young Faculty Excellence Award, 2020 from Global Multidisciplinary Research and Academic Foundation, Chennai.
Dr.B.Winmayil was honoured by our Managing Board with Star Performer Award.
A team of 20 students participated in Palsuvai Nigazhchi and Illaya Bharatham broadcast on All India Radio Madurai FM on 30th&31st March 2020.
Ms.R.Akila, II M.A. English was honoured with Sakalakalavalli Award.
Ms.R.Soundarya,I M.A. English captained the Madurai Kamaraj University Ball Badminton Team in the South Zone Inter University Ball Badminton Tournament held in Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.
Ms. R.Ram Harshini, III B.A. English won the first Prize in Paper Presentation in the Inter-Collegiate Competitions organised by N.M.S.Sermathai Vasan College for Women, Madurai on 03.08.2019.
Ms. R.Rohini, III B.A. English won the first Prize in Elocution in the Inter-Collegiate Competitions organised by V.H.N.S.N.College, Virudhunagar on 25.08.2019.

2020-2021

1 Ph.D. Scholar was awarded doctoral degreeand 5 scholars registered for Ph.D. Programme.
Dr.B.Winmayil was honoured with Star Performer Award by the College Managing Board, and Kamarajar Award by Rotary Club of Virudhunagar.
Dr.B.Winmayil published the article, “The Perceived Stress of Women as Victims or Warriors of COVID-19” in the e-book, Impact of Pandemic on Women Empowerment.
Dr.A.AnithaRaj was honoured with Kamarajar Award by Rotary Club of Virudhunagar.
Ms. R. Chitra Bharathi, III B.A. English received the Best Student Award from Kalai Matrum Ilakiya Kazhagam on 29.12.2020.
Ms.T. Abinaya Shri, III B.A. English won the title Miss. RYLA in the RYLA Camp organised by Rotary Club of Virudhunagar on 03.03.2021.

Dr.S.Sharmelee was appointed Additional Dean of Arts.

Gender sensitization Programme was organized on 26.09.2022. Ms.Priya Babu, Managing Trustee, Transgender Resource Centre, Madurai addressed the students on “Rights of the ThirdI”.
Entrepreneurial Skill Development Programme - Mrs.SubhashiniSathyamoorthy, alumna of the Department gave hands-on training to the students on Flower Stringing on 26.09.2022.
Skill Development Programme -Ms.M.N.Ram Harshini, alumna of the Department gave a lecture on “The Art of Speaking” to the Part II English students on 07.10.2022.
Health Awareness Programme – Dr.M.Vijayalakshmi, Gynecologist& Obstetrician, Vijay Clinic, Virudhunagar addressed the students on “Women’s Health” on 13.10.2022.
Halloween Day was celebrated on 31.10.2022.
