History of the Department
  • The Department of History was established in 1962 and offered pre university course. B.A. History (English Medium) was started in 1963 followed by B.A. History (Tamil Medium) in 1966. It was upgraded as a Post graduate department in 1980 and as a research department offering M.Phil., in 2004. It is recognized as a centre for Ph.D. Programme in 2014.
  • The Department has 13 qualified faculty members actively engaged in teaching and research activities. The department has marched steadily and crossed several milestones, achieving academic excellence in the field of history. To add feathers to the academic cap of the department, career oriented certificate courses are offered. The Value Added Course – Departmental and Inter-Departmental courses are included in 2019.

  • As a part of our Department Association activities we celebrate most of the National and International significant days.
  • Under Skill Development Programme we conducted One Week Workshop on Epigraphy for II UG students. For the past 30years Dr.V.Vedachalam, Rtd Curator of Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace, Madurai acted as the co-ordinator of the programme. He enriched our students in the art of reading inscription and taking estampage which is the primary source for historical research.
  • UG outgoing students are benefitted by the Certificate Course on Gandhian Thought in collaboration with Valliammal Institution, Madurai. On 14.02.2023special lecture was delivered by Dr.Kiran Seth, Founder of SPIC MACAY, Professor of IIT, Delhi on “Gandhian values”.
  • Students are enlightened with the lectures by the stalwarts of various colleges anually.   • We organized ICHR Seminar, International, National and State Level Seminar and Conferences to enhance the knowledge level of students.
  • On 26.09.2023 International conference was conducted in collaboration with Magalir Thittam.
  • Under Extension Activity, students involved in awareness program in the adopted villages on Anti-Plastic, Promotion of Indian Culture ,Importance of voting rights, Green India-Clean India, Ilamthorum Kalvi and Career Guidance.
  • Intercollegiate and Intra collegiate Competitions were conducted frequently. Students from various colleges were participated enthusiastically. 23.09.2022 we conducted Intra Collegiate Competition on the topic “Incredible India: A Treasure Trove of Cultural Tourism “.
  • Mr.T.Thangam Thennara (Ex Minister of School Education) inaugurated the Coin Exhibition and the Seminar on 18.09.2019 Our students created a record in the various competitions conducted by other colleges, and bagged overall shield. On 9.10.2019 students got over all shield in the History Day Celebration, Lady Doak College, Madurai. On 30.08.2022 our students got overall II Prize in SermathaiVasan College for Women, Madurai.
  • Our students represented in the College Union cabinet. R.Muthunagu of IIM.A served as Vice chairman (2021-2022) and Union Chairman( 2022-2023). S.Sowmiya of II.M.A acted as Cabinet Minister (2021-2022).AshikaR.M.Magi of II.M.A served Union Vice Chairman (2023-2024) .G.Sriboomi acted as the Joint Secretary in (2022-2023) and Secretary (2023-2024).
  • K.Vijayasarathy of II M.A. History served as Games Secretary and received the Best Sports Women Award ( 2021-2022).
  • R.Rajalakshmi III B.A (EM) received the Sakalakalavalli Award and Best Orator Award.R.Muthunagu of II M.A. received the Best Dancer Award (2022 – 2023).
