  • To empower the students by providing quality education through scientific aspects of food science, nutrition and dietetics, and ensure health for the family, community and nation.




History of the Department

  • The department received Rs.50 lakhs grant-in-aid from Ministry of Food Processing Industry, New Delhi in the year 2006 to offer a Postgraduate Course, M.Sc Food Processing and Quality Control. As the UG Programme is titled as B.Sc Home Science - Nutrition and Dietetics, the nomenclature of the PG Programme has been modified as M.Sc Home Science - Nutrition and Dietetics from the academic year 2020-21. The change in nomenclature would be helpful for the students to pursue higher studies and also would help to attain wider scope of career opportunities. The department extends its services for the uplift of rural homemakers, self-help groups and rural school children of rural background by extension activities. The department has good State of art laboratories with advanced equipment. It also provides scope for further research and development.

  • Conducts Departmental, Interdepartmental and Intercollegiate competitions to create awareness on the importance of food and promote culinary skills among the college students.

  • Prepares the students to handle advance technology in various food based industries and health care centers. Students have obtained prestigious placements at leading companies.

  • Offers training programmes by the qualified academicians to students enrolled in Earn while you learn and Entrepreneurial development programme cell.

  • Serves as center for EDP since 2006. Processed products are prepared and marketed through canteen.

Faculty Achievements

  • Dr.D.Vijayarani, Associate Professor and Head and Mrs.S.Balasaraswathi., Assistant Professor were Co-ordinators for programme of Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology on Dissemination of Innovative Technology (DIT) entitled on “ Food preservation and Convenience Food” during the period 24.07.2017-26.07.2017.
  • On 31.07.2019, Mrs.T. Devi, Assistant Professor of Food Processing and Quality Control presented a poster in National Symposium on “Emerging Viral Infectious Diseases” organized by the PG Biochemistry, V.V.Vanniaperumal College for Women, Virudhunagar.
  • Mrs.S.Mathangi and Mrs.T.Devi, Assistant Professors of Food Processing and Quality Control presented research papers in the International Conference on “Scientific and Social Approaches to Mental Well-being” organized by the Departments of Biochemistry, Home Science, Zoology and Botany, V.V.Vanniaperumal College for Women, Virudhunagar on 03.10.2019.
  • In collaboration with IQAC, the Department of Home Science organized a training programme to the school teachers of Virudhunagar. Mrs.R.Subha, Assistant Professor of Home Science, gave a special lecture on “Importance of Personal Hygiene” to the school teachers of Virudhunagar, organized by Rotary club of Virudhunagar on 11.01.2020 and 22.2.2020.
  • Mrs.S.Mathangi, Assistant Professor Published a paper in Scopus Journal – Materials Today: Proceedings, February, 2021, 2982–2986.
  • Mrs.S.Mathangi completed a minor research project in the academic year 2020 - 2021 entitled on “Drying Kinetics and Characterization of Ber Fruit” by receiving the grant from College Managing Board.
  • Mrs.S.Mathangi and Mrs.P.Ramalakshmi acted as resource persons in the Interdepartmental level competitions on 14.03.2021 and 22.01.2021 respectively.
  • Mrs.R.Subha acted as a resource person in training programmes conducted by ICDS on 3.11.2020, 4.11.2020, 10.11.2020 and 11.11.2020.

  • The Department won the Overall shield in Arokh Fest - 2017, an intercollegiate competitions organized by SFR College, Sivakasi on 10.01.2017.

  • Mrs.S.Mathangi, Assistant Professor won “Best Poster Award” in International Symposium at Vivekananda, College of Arts and Sciences for Women, Tiruchengode. She also published a chapter on “Horsegram as a Functional Food: An Overview” in the book entitled on Biological Sciences for Human Welfare.

  • Mrs.T.Devi, Assistant Professor won II prize in Poster Presentation in an International Workshop at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli on 10.1.2018.

  • On 29.07.2019, N.Nandhini of II M.Sc Food Processing and Quality Control participated in 44th National Selection Yogasana Championship organized by Sri Ambal Ramasamy Yoga Centre and got I place in Artistic Yoga.
  • N.Nandhini of II M.Sc Food Processing and Quality Control presented a poster in a National symposium on Emerging Viral Infectious Diseases organized by the PG Biochemistry Department on 31.07.2019.
