Mission



  • The mission of Home Science department is to prepare the students to become self-sufficient and self-reliant in the areas of Home Science to pursue higher studies, improve their quality of living and to maintain a sustainable career growth.



History of the Department

     Department of Home Science is one of the vibrant Science departments established in the year 1981. It has been selected by UGC under the vocationalisation of the first-degree programme, offering a dual degree programme of Certificate and Advanced Diploma Course in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics since 2002. Home Science course has been converted to Food Processing in 2006. The nomenclature of the course changed into B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics with Computer Applications in the year 2012 for the benefit of the students’ career. In the year -2016-2017, the nomenclature of the course was changed into B.Sc Home Science - Nutrition and Dietetics. The department extends its services for the upliftment of rural homemakers, self-help groups, rural school children and public. The main aims of the department are empowering the rural girls for societal excellence and thereby empowering the individual, family, community and the nation. The department has good state of the art laboratories with sophisticated equipments.




Highlights



  • Every year the department observes International Breast Feeding Week, National Nutrition Week, World Food Day and Yoga Day.

  • Organized State level seminars on “Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian diet - PANACEA for Modern Life Style Diseases” in 2017.

  • Organized a training programme for the Self Help Group Women sponsored by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology on Dissemination of Innovative Technology (DIT) entitled “ Food preservation and Convenience Food” during the period of 24.07.2017-26.07.2017.

  • Conducted an Inter-Collegiate Hands-on Training- Workshop on “Entrepreneurial Skills” in collaboration with the departments of Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany and Costume Design and Fashion in the year 2018.

  • Organized state level workshop on Hands on training workshop on “Entrepreneurial skills” on 9.1.19 and10.1.19.

  • Organized state level workshop on Hands on training workshop on “Entrepreneurial skills” on 4.2.19 and 5.2.19

  • A study on Impact of diet counseling among Anaemic Adolescent Girls was conducted to the WUS students. 4.2.19 and 5.2.19

  • Provided entrepreneurial training programmes to Earn While You Learn students.

  • Paper presentation at Regional, National and International level conferences by all the faculty members.

  • Every year the department offers consultancy services to various sectors.

  • Mrs. S.Balasaraswathi, Assistant Professor of Home Science got I prize for the presentation of poster on formulation of okra Mucilage Squash in the regional conference on Nutrition Insight for Healthier conducted by Indian Dietetics Association, Keelakarai on 12.8.17.

  • Mrs. S.Balasaraswathi, Assistant Professor of Home Science got I prize for the presentation of poster on Utilization of underutilized Date Seed Powder for the preparation of value added chocolate in The International Workshop On Recent Trends In Food Biotechnology And Exploration of The Opportunities To Feed The World conducted by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli on 10.1.2018.

  • Mrs. S.Balasaraswathi, Assistant Professor of Home Science got I prize for the presentation of poster on development of value added spicy porridge mix by using mulberry leaves powder in the nationallevel seminar on Contributing Lore Of Healthy Nature conducted by Immanuvel Arsar College of hotel management and applied science on 24.1.18 and 25.1.18.

  • Mrs. S.Balasaraswathi, Assistant Professor of Home Science got III prize in booklet preparation on “millet miracle” in the national seminar on Contributing Lore Of Healthy Nature conducted by Immanuvel Arsar College of hotel management and applied science on 24.1.18 and 25.1.18.
